Netting the Grapes
No nets, no grapes! End of story. Lots of work.
The nets go on in mid-February.
Capital costs and labour intensive but a 'must do' necessity. Bob goes up on the trapeze the the tractor and pulls the nets throught the hoop. Hard work. The two to four ''pullers' on each side stretch the nets to over all the rows of grapes.
We have nets that cover just one row of vines to nets that cover 4-6 rows of vines. They all have a red or black line down the middle to make sure that the nets are put on equally and ther is plenty of net to reach the vine on each side and hang down the side. They are then anchored down with rocks or bricks.
The nets go on in mid February and stay on untill the grapes are picked. They are then carefully stored in big wooden boxes, labelled for the row that they have come off of and stored for the winter and spring.
