Canopy Management & Crop Estimation Day Jan 2015
Canopy Management & Crop Estimation Day is always held on the 3rd Saturday in January. This is when we learn about how important it is to manage the canopy (foliage) on the vines in order to maximise the amount of sunlight reaching the grapes to ripen them. It is how the vine turns sunlight into wine! There was a bit of theory and classroom work, then off to watch some machinery in action then a delicious morning tea. Crop Estimation was next and everyone was assigned an area (section) to count the bunches and bring back a large one, a medium one and a small one for weighing. This will give us an estimation for how big (or small) the vintage will be for that year.
These are some pictures from a glorious Gisborne South day in January. Lots of fun and learning and making new friends. Then there is the wine of course to finish off the day. If you are interested please contact us or join our Adopt-a-Vine program.
